Why two sleep windows?

Shift workers often have two possible places to sleep around a shift: before it starts or after it ends. The better option depends on the shift, commute, family responsibilities and how much time you can realistically protect.

The planner does not tell you which one is always better. It calculates both so you can compare the trade-offs.

Night shift nurse sleep schedule

For a 19:00–07:00 shift, the planner can show a sleep window before the shift or a recovery window after it. The pre-shift calculation subtracts preparation time from the shift start. The post-shift calculation adds a buffer for commuting, food and winding down.

12-hour shift sleep schedule

A 12-hour shift leaves less room for sleep, meals and travel. A realistic plan should protect one main sleep window instead of treating every block of free time as a full night. Naps can be a separate tool, not a replacement for regular recovery.

Rotating shift sleep schedule

Rotating schedules are harder than fixed shifts. When possible, keep the sleep and wake anchors as consistent as the roster allows and use the buffer settings to reflect your actual commute and routine.

This is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Shift work can affect sleep, alertness, safety and health. Persistent insomnia, dangerous sleepiness while driving or other serious symptoms deserve professional advice.

What the planner does not account for

  • Multiple shifts in a row or a full rotating roster.
  • Childcare, caregiving or other fixed responsibilities.
  • Individual sleep needs and medical conditions.
  • Medication, caffeine, light exposure or commute conditions.
  • Whether a schedule is safe for your job or driving.
